Murarai is situated near Jharkhand on the northern border of Birbhum district. Historically it is a socially and economically backward area. Local legislator Mr. Bazle Ahmed was the first to take the initiative to establish an institution of higher education in his assembly area. As a consequence of his thought, the college came into being. On July 2, 1970 the State Minister for Public Works, Smt. Pratibha Mukherjee laid the foundation stone of Kabi Nazrul College. However, it was Dr. Motahar Hossain, who was the key person responsible for the making the dream a reality. On 13 September 1985, Kabi Nazrul College (Degree) was established and the College got approval from Burdwan University in the same year.
